Ultraviolet light systems have been used to disinfect home drinking water for decades. In fact, New York City is finishing construction on a UV facility that will treat over 1.2 billion gallons of drinking water per day. The concept is pretty straight forward. Water is passed by a UV light which scrambles the DNA of bacteria and viruses in the water so they can’t reproduce. If they can’t reproduce they can’t get you sick. The same process works for hot tubs as well.  These systems do not add any chemicals to the water or damage spa components and they play well with all spa sanitizers. Like ionization systems they periodically need to be replaced, which is as easy as replacing a light bulb.

For 2012, Sundance Spas has made UV standard on every spa they produce.
