Every swimming pool constructed has some sort of “deck” around at least part if not all of it. In years past, this was always a three-foot-wide “collar” of concrete all around the pool. If the pool had a deep end with a diving board, a seven-foot width at that end would be allowed to accommodate the board.
My, how things have changed! Today, because of the growing interest in negative and vanishing edges, beach entries, raised walls and spill-over spas around parts of the pool, the “collar” effect is becoming much less popular. Also, there are so many more excellent materials available to choose from! The traditional industry standard has been white powder-coated aluminum coping with standard, broom-finished 3500 psi concrete around the pool. Now, coping choices vary from natural stones to concrete pavers to pre-cast products to poured cantilever effects. Furthermore, the standard concrete deck is often exchanged for stamped concrete with color and texture, or concrete overlays and stains, or various stone and paver choices. Indeed, the design and development of the “deck” around the pool has become every bit as important as the pool itself!
At Goodall Pools and Spas, our designers are both familiar with and comfortable in the use of all these materials and more. Your designer will very quickly be able to offer you a variety of options, costs, and pros and cons of many different materials, and will help you to choose the best “fit” for you and your project. Regarding pricing, our basic pool costs all include the standard white aluminum coping and enough concrete to provide three feet and seven feet (around the diving area) respectively. However, when one of the many deck and coping alternatives are selected, these costs are then credited toward the item chosen.
